"That chick is hot." I have just made reference to something sexually oriented (namely, that I find someone physically attractive). I have just broke the rules.

I wonder if you can even reveal your sexual orientation, given how the words alone make it fall perfectly into the realm of "sexually oriented". I just don't know, I hate vage rules like that.

Sorry to have to shoot this down, but Lomgren's far too passive for moderatorship.

thats why I think he would be good he would basicly let most people do there own thing unless others where complaining about them

No, no, no, no, no. Lomgren is the wise sage type who sits there and gives good advice. He's not the type who goes around enforcing some semblance of order. That is why Lomgren, although a venerated bunny, is not a good choice for moderator. Moderators need to be able to take action when action is needed, and quite frankly, I don't think he'd do that, because he only posts for a few minutes at a time each day.

AP and TingYi, on the other hand...

Ting, AP and BinaryWraith seem to be winning out... any reasons they SHOULDN'T be mods?

I'm hoping to do the move, including locking of these forums, by Tuesday of next week. DNS changes will take a few days for some people, of course, so I'll be updating both sites.

Just one. TingYi thinks I'm a foul mouthed idiot. :<

But no real applicable reasons.

I don't have objections.
There is barely a way to be sure about someone's ability to mod before you didn't see him modding, anyways.

And neither would we... right off the bat.

Normally, I recommend to my mods that they talk to the people through the private message system and see if things can't be handled "off the books". If it can't or the behavior continues, then we have a warning system that's set up. Moderators can use it to not only increase the warning level of a user, but also temporarily either set it so the user requires a moderators approval on posts before they are made visible to the rest of the community (preferred) or can be temporarily suspended.

Outright banning someone is extremely rare and are taken very seriously. Even though I do handle the banning of people, the Administrators (with input from the moderators) discuss the situation. I prefer for us to have a unanimous decision on the banning of someone before the final hammer comes down.

There has been one situation where we had bypassed the warning system and banned a user outright. The user had gotten extremely insulting. Not only did he not stop after talking with the moderators and myself, but he had gotten to the point of actual threats against us and our families. After a quick conference between the administrators and a unanimous decision, and this user was permanently banned.

There are also two situations where we had people who were permanently banned and let back in. One of which has proven that she has matured and not reverted back to the actions that had her banned in the first place. The other of which didn't even make it through the first week of a probationary period before the ban was reinstated -- with no more reprieves.

On a personal note, I don't like banning people. I always try to give people plenty of chances. But I also know that the 910 Community (and before that, the Wotch Community) are filled with good people. I don't want to see them hurt or run off because of the actions of one or two people.

As for the insults, there is a vast difference between "ribbing" someone and insulting them. Dan said it best that it's only funny when both people are laughing. Things like this are taken on a case by case basis -- and then only brought to the mods or the admins as a last resort. (If you don't believe insults are allowed, you should see some of the things that have been said about me... and are still visible in the posts...)

I appreciate the efforts from some of the 910 mods over here, but if anyone wants to find out something straight from the horses mouth, you can always contact me or the other administrators directly through AIM or YIM. We're always willing to chat with someone, answer questions, and give you the straight shot. I'm on both as "tfrevor".

Hope to hear from you.

Thom, I get that you are trying to help and mean well but I believe we have this handled. Those appointed have enough knowledge of mayhem to determine when a ban is needed.

Not trying to be mean or snippy, if it comes across that way I assure you it is not intended to. At this point the 910 mod team has a very bad rep on mayhem in my view, in part thanks to the arrogant forcefulness of one of your own.
That may or may not be fair but no one from 910 said anything to counter his pushy arrogant doomsaying that has alienated a number of us.

He was stating he should be the mod when mayhem moved so yes I include him. If he was giving a deceptive impression of his status then someone should have corrected him on it.

I agree that AP would make a good Mod. Ting Yi I don't know well enough to comment on. Binary Wraith I don't think would be a good Mod. Sorry BW, but I think that your criticism of Squato could also apply to you.

Squato I don't think would be that bad a choice, personally. Not the best choice, but not the worst.

I also fully agree that three would be a good number to have. Personally, I think Stardrake would make an excellent candidate, closely followed by Xepharon. Oz Lion Heart and Chronicler C wouldn't be bad choices either, if the others don't want the responsibility.

Xeph: I don't think anyone newer then me should become a mod. Not enough time.

Oz and CC: Both are WAY to passive to make good mods. Lomgren too.

That, and CC just watches. It's what he does. He's a bard. Bards are like that.

Hey, no doubt. I'm not really too worried about it either way. If folks want me to mod, I'll mod, and do my best at it. If not, well, I've got RPs to play. :D My opposition to Squato was rather vehement, but I tend to speak my mind first and foremost, and have had bad experience with him that I felt needed sharing. I've been an administrator for a MOO for the best part of the last decade now, and despite being rather opinionated, I can state that I've never reprimanded someone for anything other than breaking the stated rules, no matter my personal opinion on the matter.

Edit : If anyone, especially Dan, has any questions or concerns, I'm pretty much always on #egs over on nightstar.net, or binarywraith on AIM. I may not be at the keys, but I'll get back to you shortly.

No, I needed an example of someone without mod powers and you happened to be one of the first names I thought of.

mdm wrote:Squato is a moderator over there. I have a link to prove it.

I'm not really sure what a link to the forum index proves. That said, a link to squato's profile should suffice to prove he's not a mod;
http://community.910cmx.com/index.php?showuser=643
Notice the title under his name "Members". He is a member.
Contrast with a moderator:
http://community.910cmx.com/index.php?showuser=275
Or a webcomic author:
