Poor Elliot, he really is having a bad day here, isn't he? Nothing quite like agonizing about how you're going to try and make up with the girl you love only to get interrupted at the last second. It's probably just as well though, I get the feeling he still wasn't all that prepared at what he had planned out would have gone right out the window once the conversation started.

I'm not so sure that part is a retcon. Both Tedd and Elliot think that Tedd's behavior is weird and out of character right then.

I'm pretty sure it is a retcon, in that Dan didn't have that part of the story planned when he did this.

It just a retcon that happens to make sense, fortunately for Dan.

It doesn't seem so much of a retcon as the reasons for it being made up after the fact. It may be an incorrect definition, but I always thought that a change to previous scenes was a requirement for it to be a retcon.

I thought the same thing once, but apparently the term is elastic enough to cover motivations and behind-the-scenes alterations as well. In any event, there's retcons and there's retcons. Removing the Bat-Dog from Batman's continuity is a retcon. So is annihilating the entire DC Universe and starting every character's story over from scratch. The word can cover a large range, after all.
