[Filler 1/6/09] Wise old Owl

After seeing the December 19, 2008's filler not to long ago, I did not find this filler a bit surprising!

I am glad to see next week will be back to cannon episodes!

(This is a recreated post after my last one was lost with the other thread.)

Well done Dan, this is some of your finest true life art you have done so far (or at least what you have shown the internet). I have to ask, is this from a photo, a model, or did you happen to spot a living owl that you drew?

As to the news, good to know the comic shall be back.

I'm afraid I must live up to my nickname.

"Cannon" episodes would be about artillery. A "canon" episode is one which is officially recognized as doctrinal.

If Alex King was a character of import in EGS then Cannon episodes and Canon episodes might coincide, but given that EGS is crossover-null, that'll never happen.
As to my reaction to the news/filler itself: see Squato's post.

Very nicely done! For the most part, Dan's art is a high quality cartoony style. This owl, on the other hand, looks like he might take flight off the paper! And he looks... soft. I want to pet that owl.

I'm curious. When did Dan get a time machine? Not only is he telling us that there WILL be a story comic on Tuesday, he posting a drawing that was done, according to the date, on the 12th of May 2009!

Or, more likely, it was December 5th, and he was just a bit ahead on calling it 2009.

Also, just as a hint, camp, taking out the Firefox Download Day ad would be a good first step to shortening your signature, seeing as how that day has long since passed. Ditto with the fake election banner.

Hope and stupidity are two different things, and assuming that EGS will stay on a 3 a week schedule for most of the year would be pretty stupid.
The book is almost always better than the movie. You could have no better case in point than FROM HELL, Alan Moore's best graphic novel to date, brilliantly illustrated by Eddie Campbell. It's hard to describe just how much better the book is. It's like, "If the movie was an episode of Battlestar Galactica with a guest appearance by the Smurfs and everyone spoke Dutch, the graphic novel is Citizen Kane with added sex scenes and music by your favourite ten bands and everyone in the world you ever hated dies at the end." That's how much better it is. - Warren Ellis.

You can travel light years through the stars and back, and if you do it at the speed of light then, when you return, you may have aged mere seconds while your twin brother or sister will have aged twenty, thirty, forty or however many years it is, depending on how far you travelled.
This will come to you as a profound personal shock, particularly if you didnt know you had a twin brother or sister."

You remember that America and Britain use different systems for writing the date, right?

Yeesh! If you use two digits for the year, things get even worse.
Assuming Dan was hasty on the year and dated the drawing December 5, 2009:
Little-endian: 05/12/09 (DD/MM/YY) 5th of December, 2009 (full)
Big-endian: 09/12/05 (YY/MM/DD) 2009 December 5th (full)
Month-first: 12/05/09 (MM/DD/YY) December 5th, 2009 (full)
Big-endian sees very little use, but it is out there.
I vary between little-endian and month-first when using month names, but always use little-endian with month numbers

Little-endian makes the most sense, as its sortable.
In general the whole system is screwed, doomed to forever be ambiguous.

I was “active” in the Y2K mess (both ignoring the false alarms and working hard to fix one of the few real problems) and I fell into the habit of using 9999Aaa99 format e.g. 2009Jan06, which can only be parsed one way. If you want it sortable (I usually do) you can use 999999Aaa99 format e.g. 200901Jan06, where the 01 and Jan are redundant but make it both sortable and easily human-readable at the cost of making it marginally possible to parse it incorrectly.

Squee! An Owl!
It appears that my shameless pandering for more owls has paid off. I shall check this off my list.

Filler Owl Pandering Needs: SATISFIED.
Canon Owl Pandering Needs: Queued...

Thank you so much for this beautiful owl.

I am getting a serious psygnosis logo -flashback out of that owl. It's probably the fierce, staring eyes. It's a nice owl. Who doesn't have to eat me. I am reading a book with one hand and typing with the other. I swear!

Month-name-first full form and abbreviated full form ("January 6th, 2009" and "Jan. 6, 09") and little-endian "2/Mon/2" (06/Jan/09) are the most human-readable, in my opinion. Numerical big-endian forms are the most sortable, but the least intuitive to human readers. Hayla, I'd read your redundant month format (unless it's changed to include delimiters) as "the Sixth of January, 200901" (ninety-nine years short of Y201K). I somehow don't think that's what you're going for. I'd consider 2009/01/06 to be more readable than the run-together 2009Jan06, anyways. 2009/Jan/06 is more readable still.

I normally use little-endian-with-names, but sometimes use big-endian(with names or numbers) using colons as the separators, with a double-colon separating the date and time if present. I actually have my Keenspot forum view set this way, so I saw your post time as 2009:Jan:06::15:13.
