What are you looking forward to at San D?

Postby macclint on Tue Jun 25, 2002 2:12 pm

:D My excitement is building!

I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of the Sequential Tart people I've been corresponding with, I want to meet Stan Sakai, (as I've been getting into Usagi Yojimbo in a big way), I'm really looking to going to the orig. art dealers booths and flipping through pages and pages of well drawn originals (and drooling over the Hal Foster originals I can't afford).

If all goes well, I'll have a reprint book of my strips out, and I'll be able to spread the word of the naturey adventure goodness that is Wandering Ones. :D

I'm looking forward to seeing the people I met in person last year, and hopefully a bunch of new people too. I haven't really looked in the booklet to see what else is going to happen, but I'll be sure to do a lot of it. I want to attend the Keenspot panel discussion, whatever it turns out to be.

And I'm also looking forward to being on vacation outside of my hometown for a few days *without* having to do a whole lot of exhausting physical activity, and without having to wake up so freaking early. I just got back from a martial arts tournament in Colorado. A vacation not involving exertion or jetlag sounds very inviting right now...

It's all about the fans for me, baby. Sure, I'll probably go see anything having to do with Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, but for me this is a working weekend. I try to make myself available as much as possible at these events, and anytime I can talk with a reader is golden. I also love talking shop with other Keensp*ers and jamming on collaborative art.

You might have asked before, but if you did I don't remember. I study Tomiki style Aikido. It's the only style of Aikido that holds competitions.

BTW, Clint, have you ever heard of Wilderness Press?

A small publisher specializing in books on the outdoors: hiking, kayaking, etc. I just asked because I thought you might have heard of them...or rather I should say us, since I work for them. :)

Well, it's in the curriculum, but not really. Some of the upper-level kata include techniques against and with the bokken (also some with the jo staff, standing in for a yari), but it's not something you test on as a kyu-grade. As a kyu-grade, you're more likely to see the bokken techniques when sensei wants to demonstrate how the hand motions were derived from swordwork--or if he just wants to do something different that day. The majority of our practice is against knife strikes, hand grabs, and punches.

http://www.tomiki.org/ is the main site for the JAA/USA (the umbrella organization).

Meeting as many authors and fellow fans as I can, in the ONE day I'm going to be driving down for the con.
Any plans for a big get-together on Saturday the 3rd?
That's when I'm coming, and it's also my birthday. Woo.
