idle chatter.

The noble Order of the Knights of Jubal traces its origins back to the Year Two Thousand A.D., when a group of distinguished persons of good and true character, founded the order to promote chivalry and honour. The order takes its name from our leader, Alexander Jubal McRae, who on two (so far) occasions has been seriously injured, in one case fatally, defending an innocent woman from attackers.

Hmm.... "That which comes before the beginning." I wonder if this can be equated to the Greek concept, "Logos." The sophists were essentially pantheists who believe that Logos (from which we get "Logic" and "-logy" and means, closely enough, 'word') was the life force that made up everything and gave us life. Fire was almost pure Logos to them.
John the son of Zebedee (credential list: the Boargene or "son of Thunder"; the "Revelator" or author of Revelation; the "Doctor of Love" for his letters, I, II, and III John; and the disciple whom Jesus Loved that wrote the gospel called John) used the Sophist idea to express how Jesus revealed Himself to him:

quote:
John 1.1-5, 9-14:
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made
that has been made.
In him was life,
and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness,
but the darkness has not understood it...
The true light that gives light
to every man was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and though the world was made through him,
the world did not recognize him.
He came to that which was his own,
but his own did not receive him.
Yet to all who received him,
to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God--
children born not of natural descent,
nor of human decision or a husband's will,
but born of God.
The Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory,
the glory of the One and Only,
who came from the Father,
full of grace and truth.

Beautifully poetic, and very much tied up in the idea of "Rei."

Let me start by saying that there is no question that irritates me more than "a/s/l?"
Then let me follow it up with an explanation for my handle, which is a question I'll gladly answer.
When I first got online way back in 1991, I wandered from message board to message board as I had a broad array of interests (still do). I saw more and more people using handles and nicknames instead of their real names, so I thought I'd board that particular train.
Here's the boring part: since I wandered around the 'net, I went to the Thesaurus and looked up the word "wanderer". "Vagabond" was staring me in the face, and I have been "The Vagabond" ever since.
------------------

*hopes rei sees this thread*
why is that, mana? But to satisfy the curious, rei is sort of my personal nickname. It also, as I have discovered, means in Japanese something along the lines of 'that which comes before the beginning' (old) or the name for numerical zero (modern). I haven't gone to the trouble of digging out my old Nihonese dictionary, though, so don't take that as gospel
the rest? I'll let you guess

I express some of the same irritation at that question.
Besides, I've already given it in a different thread. Go look it up, hmm?
My handle springs forth from the Apprentice Adept series by Piers Anthony.
Silver is my color, apparently, although I came up with this handle after I found out that Silver is my birth color (Cancer...) and I mixed the two together to create the Silver Adept, master of coloration.

You'll note I didn't put my ASL either. Look it up in my profile. TKarrde, as appears I think in this forum and I know in others, is a throwback to my favorite character in Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, by Timothy Zahn. Talon Karrde establishes himself as the top smuggler in the SW Universe after the not-so-untimey demise of Jabba the Hut. I began using it in 1998 (hence the number) for AOsmelL instant Messenger and it stuck.

No worries. We knew it was there, but we chose not to answer. As a wise man once said, "There are three things which, once given over, can never be returned: a spent arrow, a lost opportunity, and a spoken word."
We still like you, we just don't answer. And if it makes you feel better, 23/m/Spokane (Go Zags!).

I was on a trip to Seattle last fall with my college's International Club. Also on the trip were Nino, from Georgia (nation, not US state), and Asuka from Japan. Another student was telling us (Nino and I) what she and Asuka were doing that evening, but in her accent she always pronounced the "u" sound (which Asuka does not). Nino winced, and pointed out that in Russian, "A Suka" is a very nasty eptithet. We got much humor from that, and we all endeavored to say "Aska" with the silent "u" from then on out.

I wasn't going to post, but since people started talking about Evangelion, I started thinking of where my name was based on.
Partly it's based on my name (Sue) and partly on a character from an old TV series Soolyn (Blakes 7), who was extremely cool (in my opinion - although Avon was always my favourite), and who I wanted to grow up to be like (although I failed miserably there).
Eh (shrugs) - probably most people won't even know what I'm talking about (am I starting to babble? - sorry)
Suelyn

Mine story is fairly boring by comparison.
I now go by "Greg" or "Sir Greg", but prior to that, and in many places still, I use the handle "Mystic".
Simply because I used to play a wizard in D&D by that name, and it stuck.
For a while, I actually had a business called "Mystic Services" do computing, and theatrical lighting and sound. However, since the taxation laws became much more complicated, it wasn't worth the effort to continue.
PIQE,

Hey all. I'm BACK!!! Duck is here... Anyways, i figured on dropping in on this subject. Here it goes.
Mana: I have seen Eva. Most of the episodes up through the disaster with EVA-04. The worst thing for me was that my first time watching Eva was watching End of Eva that a friend of mine got fansubbed. Thankfully, it hasn't totally messed me up. I've also seen a lot more anime, and planning on going to the Anime Central Convention in Chicago sometime in April. So don't worry, you're not alone. (plus if i had to choose, i'd choose Rei. Asuka's too overbearing, and i know that if I was there, i would make Rei act more human. )
as for my username, when i started out on the net, i was facing the same dilemma as most others, trying to get a name not already used. I decided on Bandman since i had been in Middle School and High School band all that time and 2K is refering to when i graduated from High School. My other nickname is Duck which was given to me by my Anime buddies. We were at a Denny's after an Anime Night went very far south (police were called) and everyone was talking to each other with their group names. Well when they heard that my first name is Howard, they automatically thought about the movie Howard the Duck, about a loud-mouthed, drinking, cigar-chomping duck from outer space. Ever Since, the name is stuck and my friends in my present Anime Group call me Duck.
WEll that's my story and have a nice day.
------------------

The only problem with a nickname like that: how do you tell if they're trying to get your attention or warning you to lower your head?
------------------

Nice Try Unit, but you're a bit wrong.
Van:
Loudmouthed: I've been known to be, but not so much recently.
Drinking: only at my dad's house and I don't leave his house that night if i do drink, so no DWI problems there. (although in one year from this month, i will be old enough to drink legally)
Cigar-chomping: I used to smoke cigars, but now only Camels. Every once in a while, when i'm trying to save some cigarettes, i'll smoke a cigar.
That should about cover it.
The wierdest thing is, when the movie came out and people in school were calling me Howard the Duck, they would get me very mad and i would have "problems" with them. Not Until the Anime group did i get over it and now i don't mind being called Duck.

Inflection solves everything.
Duck! as a short syllable or two is the command, usually. Whereas Duck! in a more laid-back manner is trying to attempt communications with him.
And I was working off of what I knew about you from when we're together. What you do elsewhere I'm not supposed to know about.

Hi there!

quote:
Originally posted by Mana_Weed:

We progressed through AD&D and in to Second Edition, spending most of our time in Forgotten Realms and Spelljammer.
After I finished high school, the group drifted apart. I started DMing an AD&D campaign, but it never got off the ground.

quote:

Tell me, if you had to create a were-cat/were-panther race (Chelsea, we're thinking of you!) what advantages/disadvantages would you put on there? (Prefereably Newbie-friendly) or would you just advise to stick with the Humans like the gamemaster (because I don't know the proper term) recommended?
If you would Recommend Humans, skip the rest of this post.

If you're new to the game, stick to one of the main character classes so you can get the feel of it. Human or Elf, although Elves can be tricky to roleplay in (what I consider) a proper way.
It's very important that you remember when playing that it's the storyline that's important. It's easy to get hung up on your statistics and combat abilities, when they're really quite minor in a well run game.

quote:
He said something about making the front claws a weapon that did less damage and were quick, back claws that could stun an opponent for a round, and teeth that did more damage but were slower. He also said it would be good to be a thief cat becuase if you rolled a low number when jumping on an opponent they could easily throw you off and you would take damage unless you rolled, which only a thief cat could do etc.
Just wondering.
I was hoping you'd have time maybe... and that it wouldn't be too difficult for a n00b.

Yes, it would be difficult, and it's really not my place to do it.
To introduce a new race, particularly with a player character, is a call your DM should make. I could research it and make up a quite a good cat-people race, but it might not fit in with the campaign, or might throw the game out of balance.
Here's what I mean:
Let's compare the cat person you've described with a typical human fighter.
A human with an strength score of, say, 16 with a longsword, shield and armour. Normally, they would have an armour class of about 2, and would attack once per round causing 1d8+1 damage.
The cat-person you've described would be able to attack 3 times per round (two paws and a bite). Using the AD&D stats for a Lion, the front paws would do 1d4 damage, back claws do 1d6+1 and a bite would do 1d10.
So each round you'd get 3 chances to hit, with a up to 15hp damage as a thief, when an equivalent fighter can do only 9hp and only 1 hit roll. This in addition to the thief skills and abilities you have in your human form.
This is what I mean by out of balance. The character is too powerful.
The other thing to consider is the practical implications of playing a werecat. When Chelsea transforms, she loses all her clothes and items.
So what would happen to your character's clothes? Items? Money? What happens if you tried to change whilst wearing armour?
When you fight as a cat, you couldn't wear any magical armour or use any special weapons. And how would you communicate with the other party members?
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but for a newbie player, you're better off sticking wth the standard character classes and races until you've gotten the hang of it.
PIQE,
Greg
