I know what step exercise is, and I know the expression "one foot in the grave," but I don't see the connection. Then again, I didn't understand Hal Vetica either. Some of these puns are just too subtle for me...
------------------

"Helvetica" is a name of a fairly common (Adobe? Borland?) typeface/font...
If I remember rightly, it's a trademarked brand name for a font that is similar to Arial.

Clearly, the humor of today's is intimately tied to the origin of the word "STEP": from the aulde-Engglishe "STEPPEG", meaning "to allude with images hewn of rock and iron to falling into a deep pit while sweating". The humor is in modern internet interpretation of version or "Rock" and "Iron".
Are we all clear on that, now?
By the way, I hear Hal Vetica's obscure and longwinded cousin Tim Newroman will be stopping by the strip soon.
------------------
