Bats in comics

In just a few weeks it will be mosquito season where I live (Portland Maine), I may go out to feed the little brown bats Which is to say there is a place near where I live that if you stand still mosquitoes will come from all over, and the bats come after the mosquitoes, I've had as many as half a dozen bats flitting around me at a time. It is incredible neat. I'm not even going to try to describe the noises they make as the zip erraticaly around you. Jackie, my girlfriend, also thinks that it's cool, and has tried to find a spot near where she lives to do the same. In this case the umm, lair is a cellar that got paved over but still has a few gratings where the cellar windows used to be. There must be a several hundred bats in that basement, but there is no way that I can count them as they come out, first one or two, then a very loud RUSTLE!!! as they come pouring into the sky. About 3 seconds later they are all gone, except for one or two stragglers. And, just in case you wondered, this is in the city, in a residential area. Thank gods we don't have trucks coming through spraying bugkiller anymore.

However, you have to wonder about the creativity of some zoologists, the two bat species most common in Maine bear the common names 'little brown bat' (Myotis lucifugus) and 'big brown bat' (Eptesicus fuscus). And well, the descriptions fit pretty closely, but are lacking in any form of romance whatsoever.

I don't currently have the opportunity to check through the strips, but I seem to remember that in the Misty the Mouse episode, http://www.mistythemouse.com/Misty20020417.html where she winds up singing for the Country character for ZigZag, the receptionist was a bat. Most likely, she is in Sabrina Online as well. And I seem to remember someone saying that ZigZag has her own comic? *wry grin* I can't remember. But eh, bat character.

She's not in SO though, I just looked through my printouts and didn't notice anything winged at all. And she's not in the recent group picture (246).
The building is different too. Probably a different reality, or perhaps earlier or later in Zig's career.

Zig doesn't have her own comic yet... though Max the Black Rabbit (her creator) does proliferate drawings and has plans for a strip someday if the whim takes him to start it, from what I understand. In the meantime, she has a story, which you can find at http://www.zzstudios.com, written by James Brunner.

Bats: the most extraordinary display of bats in flight I've ever seen was at Carlsbad Caverns, in southern New Mexico. The massive entrance ot the cave has an area where people aren't invited to visit, because it's where the bats live in the thousands. When dusk comes, people are invited to sit in the natural ampitheater in front of the cave, where a ranger answers questions about the bats and then you can watch them begin their night's hunting. It's an incredible sight.

There's also a sporadically recurring character who is a bat in 21st Century Fox. She appeared once or twice in the early days in human size (5-6 ft tall). She has since been reintroduced as being mouse-sized to be more prototypically correct.

May I suggest a trip to the local zoo? I don't know what is available to you in South Dakota, but in Seattle we had a fabulous Nocturnal House with about a dozen different types of bat. Main differences I can recall were size and diet. A library could be useful, too.

Well like for my comic, the bat character I made came from the idea from a story my dad told me when he was in Okinawa for a military TDY of seeing his first bat because they were coming out of trees near some airplanes he was working on at night.
I went on a search on bats in Okinawa and the description of the bat from my dad matched to the Ryukyu or Okinawa Flying Fox.

Just got to introduce Joue.

Yea yea. It is pun, sorry. My parents cometimes slur 'pun' to 'punt' because of their southern accent and so sometimes I don't catch it as a typo.

Okay, this has been gathering dust for a while, but I found another one. Actually this is from a comic I discovered a couple of years back, that hasn't updated since 2002. I just did some cleaning up and moved some stuff off my hard disk (to a zipdisk), including this comic. Looking through some of the last episodes I came across this:

Those who wish to explore further should be warned that this is not a family comic, and the humour is kind of rough (the strip above is a pretty typical example). The protagonist is a REALLY bad bunny...

EDIT: I have deleted the contents of this post that was originally about a strip called One Knight's Tail. It ran for a couple of months last year, and ended the first chapter with a promise to return this year, but it hasn't so far, and now the server has shut down.
Anyway it *had* a bat character I can't tell you more about because I didn't save any of the strips...

Their cast page seems to be broken, but 13 Seconds has a bat in it. A gay bat, no less.

Second (!) edit: The cast page works now. It doesn't mention anyone's species but with a name like Basil D. Fledermaus and a face like this it should be pretty obvious...

Right, I don't remember that many snakes in comics either. To return to bats and space opera (buffa), the crew of Apollo 9 (both the strip and the ship it's about) includes a flying fox - not a fox that flies, but a kind of bat.
This strip shows his/her rather spectacular arrival into the series - through the ceiling of course!
