So let's see. We've done Pride, I think...that was the river of filth, right?

Then Anger (Talk Radio appearance), Lust (Pornmonster), and Gluttony (Archio). And now we've started in on Sloth. Did I miss one?

i don't think so - the ones left are envy and greed. bruno may be lucky he sidestepped greed - i would think that would be an essential component in the character of a bandit....certainly seems to be in bruno.

i have to pass this site along, for everyone's info. i do find it rather odd that the cow should be chosen as the symbol of lust...or perhaps there's a reason they're so contented.....

I can't help wondering...When is it considered sin anyway? Remember, back in "No Offense", some fun was poked at the ailixist priest who said it was a sin to enjoy eating (and claimed he was big-boned).
It seems to me that many religions consider pleasure to be somehow evil. My take is a bit different, I guess...Altough I do admit that Gluttony or Lust can be problematic if you let them override your good sense. Which was obviously what almost happened to Bruno.

on my cynical days, i figure what they _really_ object to is other people having more fun.

i think, however, the more theologically correct explanation is that too much devotion to the pleasures of the flesh (like sex and eating and just lazing around) distract one from proper attention to maintenance of the spirit. and things like anger and greed can lead you into clearly bad behavior - like assault and theft.

all of these, of course, are not from the Bible, they are things thought up later by various theologians, which can lead one into a whole _other_ discussion....but not today.

My cynical days have begun a few years ago, and haven't really stopped  .

Greed can make you misbehave whithout resorting to theft - look at today's businessworld!
My personnal take on the matter is that if a religion discourages its devotees from pursuing pleasure, then they'l be more likely to proselytise, thus ensuring a wider base to the religion. Basic memetics...Ideas evolve just like living beings. (I'm sorry if what I wrote here offended anyone - I just wanted to explain my position, nothing more).
Of course, even if my explanation is correct, it still doesn't say how the religion justifies the need to avoid pleasure. Altough the "it distracts from the true path" explanation sounds as good as any.

i wish i knew more about ancient religions (not that i'm an expert on christianity). the roman empire, in particular, collected religions from _everywhere_ - they took isis-worship from egypt, and of course christianity got a good foothold there, mithraism was another eastern religion, and even the traditional 'roman' gods (jupiter, juno, mars, venus, etc.) were taken over from the greeks. with all those religions around, you would think one at least would allow the worshipers to pray for good (earthly) times. actually, i guess there was one - bacchus. wish i knew something about what his worship entailed - couldn't have been all good times, though, or _he_ would have been the chief god....

The really popular god in Rome, early on, was Mars, who of course was god of War. Which pretty much sums up their attitude.

Later they stole the Greek pantheon pretty much intact, so impressed were they with Greek culture, and the focus shifted somewhat to Jupiter as a stand-in for Zeus. Indeed, Jupiter basically became a somewhat more civilized version of Zeus. The same is true for all the Roman Gods, who basically ended up morphing into their Greek counterparts.

Another big one for the Romans was ancestor/ruler worship...most of the Emperors were considered divine, and a lot of them milked this pretty mercilessly, setting up temples in their honour, etc.

Anyway, back to Bruno. I imagine Ian's saving "Greed" for last, that probably being the toughest one for Bruno to circumvent! It's funny, though, the ancients considered "Pride" to be the biggest sin (that's the one Lucifer comitted, after all) yet Bruno waltzed through that one without too much trouble.

well, 'ego' isn't exactly the same as 'pride' ... and with his streetcleaning experience, a quick wade through sewage isn't so bad.

I don't think wading through the muck was the *official* Pride trial. Well, I guess it could have been, but it seems more likely to me that Bruno is going to have to go through something even worse. Maybe passing the actual trial of pride is going to require him to shave off his moustache. =P

I remember Carlin worrying whether Bruno would be able to face losing his crown, so I imagine that'll come up somewhere in this business.

Hmmm...so what are we seeing here, with the colour and whatnot? Greed (for more readers) or Envy (of strips with colour and bosoms etc.)? It could go either way.

I'm guessing we're in envy. Greed would make more sense with Bruno not wanting to give up the crown.

rats - it 's envy. still, it seems to be envy of more popular 'toons, so my logic was right. and envy and greed are pretty closely related, when you think about it... i mean, envy often _stems_ from greed, and vice versa, so really, even though i was wrong, i was right.

*sigh* gotta stop keeping track of my predictions....

Actually "greed", in the context of the deadly sins, refers to greed for material wealth. It's also called avarice, which is a better term IMO because it distinguishes it from gluttony.

which _really_ makes me wonder how carlin is going to drag bruno past it .... i mean, 'bandit' is pretty much synonymous with 'greed'.
