Did you catch Carlin's expression as he said that? He actually looked...angry.

Also, it looks like this is following Fiona's reflections in "Unforgiving".

Oh, he can be... when appropriate.

if one wanted to be difficult, one could point out the use of backfires....but i take the point. (and applaud it, actually. who was it who said "an eye for an eye soon makes the whole world blind?")

And while we're at it:

    Where there's a Will there's a motive
That which doesn't kill us makes us poorly
A bird in the hand does it on the wrist

(Thanks to comedian Mike Harding for that last one)

Happy '03, folks! :D

forest fires

Postby ycefyre on Mon Jan 06, 2003 10:58 am

As far as fighting fire with fire goes, I think that's a good comeback for it. :D

However, Forest Service fire fighters DO fight fire with fire (to make burnlines that (hopefully) the out-of-control fire cannot/will not cross), and controlled burns are very helpful for preventing major fires, because they burn up all the dead stuff (underbrush, trees, branches, etc.) so there is less fuel for uncontrolled burns (i.e. forest fires). Forest fire is basically the only natural disaster in north Idaho, and there's a lot of forest and Forest Service land up here.
I do agree that that saying is rather illogical in any other sense, though.

Fighting Fire with Fire

Postby Rampantmouse on Thu Jan 09, 2003 11:46 am

Actually, the Forestry service does start small controlled forest fire to 'thin out' the overgrown areas of the forests. Without such efforts, you get the same kind of massive out-of-control blazes we see in California and other areas where environmentalists have blocked such precautions.

As for not using force to defend the innocent from tyrants, well, we saw how well non-violence worked for the jewish people in World War II. For that matter, economic sanctions to deter the construction of weapons of mass destruction and nuclear devices only work when the targetted country can't make up the loss by selling the nukes, etc, to other countries.

Ah, yes... like the controlled burn that got out of control in New Mexico. Some good friends of mine lost everything due to the forestry services' blunder.
