"V" as in Vanity?

Postby CodeGuy on Thu Apr 06, 2006 11:29 pm

Vanity doesn't seem quite right. Hmmm.

Vice?
Vulture?
Vile?
Vicious?
Villainous?
Vainglorious?
Vaunting?

I'm kinda liking vainglorious.

vociferous, has always been a favourite of mine, and seems appropriate.

Thematically, voracity goes well with greed and avarice.

Hmm. Voracity doesn't have the same feel of malevolence that greed and avarice give me. Technically, it should. The definition from dictionary.com is

1. Consuming or eager to consume great amounts of food; ravenous.
2. Having or marked by an insatiable appetite for an activity or pursuit; greedy: a voracious reader.

So yeah, it should fit. I'm just used to it being used benignly, like with voracious reader.

Personally was thinking more along the lines of 'vengeful'...

Voracity is a good example of where connotation and denotation have moved apart a bit... nonetheless it isthe only thematic possibility, which was why I thought it was "obvious."

Of course we're trying to put a pattern together with two data points, when there might not even be a pattern.... :p

It's not the only thematic possibility. Vainglorious fits the theme wonderfully. It's just not as common a word.

miss kyri is quite correct that we're "trying", but that does not stop us, does it?

"Vainglorious" does not fit the theme I had in mind -- the "covetousness" theme:

http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=covetousness
http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=avarice
http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=greed

The only "v-" word appearing along with both "greed" and "avarice" is "voracity". The only thematic possibility -- for this theme.

I don't know. For some reason, Violence fits the theme that I'm thinking of - major sins.

Whose major sins? Violence is not one of Gav's characteristics, is it?

Avarice/greed is one (and the same) of the seven deadly sins. Violence is not even on the list. (For a theme of cardinal sins, vanity/vaingloriousness (aka pride) might fit, I suppose.)

Maybe that's one I was thinking of, instead. For some reason, since Gav is thinking of building a giant robot to go terrorize with, violence came to mind first.

Agreed. While perhaps not directly violent, many of his activities have rather violent aspects to them.

As for the 7 sins, may I suggest this as an aspect of Wrath?
