An agnostic experiment...

Postby STrRedWolf on Fri Dec 16, 2005 3:20 pm

Remember Schroedinger's cat experiment, the basis behind the Schroedinger's box?

mulethunder replied to a LJ post of mine with this: "I propose that you modify the experiment. There should be a chimney on the box, and a little lateral opening to represent a fireplace. Then you place a plate of cookies in the box, under saran wrap, and seal it. I'm sure you can work out the interpretation from there."

Sounds like a plan, I'm right on it.

I've already got a Schrodinger's Box beneath my tree - no dead cat though, to my displeasure - and it will be a simple task to convert it thus. However, isn't there still only a 50/50 chance of Santa, if you were to correctly mirror Schrodinger's experiment?
Or am I just a looney?

It isn't really 50-50 probability in the schroedinger cat case. If the atom had a probability of 1/2 to decay in one hour, there would be 50-50 dead/alive probability after one hour, 75-25 after two, 87.5-12.5 after three, etc. The cat would be increasingly more dead. After a day you can be pretty sure it's over. But although the waveform becomes increasingly skewed, it doesn't (under the usual interpretation) collapse untill observation, and so the cat will always be a teensyweensy bit alive and very much dead at the same time, in a sense.
Or at least, that's my take on it.

In my house the cookies would be eaten by the end of the day.
Would that therefor be proof of santa? Or just proof of a grandmother who isn't respecting the experement.

Even if you throughly sealed the box with duct tape?
