Neutron poisions shutting down Teri?

It's not MAD science...just disappointed.

might be that the robot ant was designed for a one way mission, spreading ant-like devastation before exploding.

Teri's robat ant is nuclear powered.
Since this robat ant was developed for the military (or so we assume) why didn't they use naval grade fuel (rummored to be around 90% U235) so they could shutdown without having to worry about neutron poisons preventing a restart?
(no, I really don't care _that_ much. It just seemed like the kind of question that belonged here.)
W

What you're talking about is probably classified anyway. You couldn't fit a reactor into an ant that size until it were at least 90% enriched anyway, so that was a good assumption.

Of course you would have Xenon. I don't think there is any way around it. If you yank out the control rods and dump out your poisions, and you still only have a Keff of 1.0001, Xenon is going to prevent you from starting up for 24 hours.
However if you have a very high 'reactivity' in your core, a little bit of poision isn't going to matter. That is why you would use very high grade fuel. (terminoligy errors are my own. It has been a few years since I have cracked a nuke textbook.)

quote:

That's probably a fair assumption of Danny.
Gav (the character), on the other hand, is more of the type that would LIKE to be a theorist/experimentalist/expert-at-everything, but in the end, his abilities are primarily limited to all things related to web page programming. He certainly gets good ideas (cell phone microwave), but how often do you see them implemented? When it comes to truely coming up with something useful, it's more likely you'll see him stealing something from Danny.
And, no, it's not likely he's seen a diffusion equation in a good number of years... if at all.
Any similarities between the character and the author are purely for you to imagine...

It would explain a lot.
The character Gav (if I may distinguish between the author and the character ) seems like an "experimentalist" comp-sci type who is pretending to be Nuke theorist. When was the last time he even glanced at a neutron diffusion equation? Or held a decent conversation with a CFD problem? Or even researched explosive triggering mechanisms to build A-Bombs. (For his global domination project, or his next advisor's meeting.)
But we see him programming AI's (Teri), building internet gadgets (his glasses), or just plain surfing the web. When is he going to accept the fact that he has sold his soul, get a real job, get rich, and take over the world the old fashioned way? (buy it.)
W
