Standup comic, died in the early to mid-nineties. Highly acerbic and critical of the religious right, the government, upper-class fooferaw, etc. Sort of a Lenny Bruce for the eighties, and no fair asking me who Lenny Bruce was. I discovered him when I found out that Bill Maher's "cowards" quote that earned him fame and hatred on Politically Incorrect was actually sourced by Hicks five years earlier. Lots of material out there on the Web, including a buttload of Realplayer files for those who want to get acquainted. Garth Ennis, who wrote a comic called "Preacher," actually wrote Hicks in posthumously because he liked him so much.
Whew.

Shepherd, not to be a jerk, but the "cowards" quote I'm thinking of was given by Maher in September 2001, more than 7 years after Hicks died. It's a nitpicky thing, I know - where's the Hicks quote? It seems believable to me that they came up with them independently...I know I've thought similar things (well, not that the US armed services are cowards, but that terrorists don't fit my definition of coward, and Cris Chrosbhy said pretty much the same thing on September 12 in Superosity).
I had Hicks confused with Kevin Meany for years, so I thought the guy whose mother said "That's not riiigghhtt!" was dead...
------------------

I must be living under a rock or something, because he doesn't ring any bells.
I still recommend listening to some Hicks... there's a jim-dandy Hicks MP3 archive at http://www.billhicks.co.uk/faithinaction/mp3s.html and I endorse "Dinosaurs In The Bible" as a good start. For non-Christians, at least.

Gosh darn it, I never should have picked "Shepherd" as my user name. It's also my last name, and now people call me "Shepherd," which makes me feel like I'm in trouble.
Anyway, I didn't take anything as being jerky. It may be a case of great minds thinking alike, but the actual B.H. quote (from BillHicks.com) is...

"They blow themselves up in order to get at us, and we launch 3 million dollar missiles off of giant floating iron islands 2000 miles away - Who are the real cowards?"

What's your middle name, Matt?
Kevin Meany - you know, the standup comedian who punctuates many jokes with a scolding-mom-toned "That's not RIIIIGHT!"
------------------

It's better than having "NAKED ANIME CHICK GUY" on your tombstone. Believe me.

Heh... it might be kind of cool to post the line art for V,H! for the FanColorists out there to work on. I mean, those are exam 70-642 beautiful, crisp lines just begging for people to color up for you. :D You do fantastic work. :) But you already knew that, even if you (as all cartoonists/artists do) deny it. (That doesn't count me, because my art sucks. But hey, I don't practice so... :P)

Keep up the great work! And the comic story itself is turning out to be rather a lot of fun!exam 70-630
