Self-indulgence

Cannot be described through mere words.

OK, once again I'm so desperate to get people to post that I'm setting myself up for abuse.
SOAR was recently described as "puerile, self-indulgent trash", which I choose to take as constructive criticism.
Now, while I agree wholeheartedly with the "puerile" and "trash" parts, I must say I don't get the "self-indulgent" bit. I've always thought that I don't have enough ego to be self-indulgent. But I guess I do...so HIT ME! What are the worse examples of self-indulgitude in Soap on a Rope?
PS: Feel free to click on all the ads whilst poring thru the archives, and it may also help to yell "WWW.SOAPROPE.COM!" out the window with a bullhorn too. Try it, it's great therapy!
------------------

Seriously, is there any other context that
might help us figure out what they meant
by self-indulgent?
In a sense, all web comics are (or should be)
self-indulgent, in that you're not really
doing it for the money, and you put up what
*you* think is funny.
If you're not putting up what you think is
funny, but what you think will 'sell' well,
that is, what will get readers, whether you
like it or not, then you're not self-
indulgent, but you're probably an a**hole.
I really can't think of any SoaR's that are
self-indulgent in any other sense (and I have
them all memorized). You've gone self-aware,
which isn't the same thing, like three times
in four years. You haven't put in the strips
what a great guy Bob Roberds is, nor how we
should all hate the people Bob Roberds hates.
Without other context, my guess would be that
whoever wrote that wasn't thinking through
what it meant, and only wanted to use some
big put-down words.
Jerk.
------------------

I think the "puerile, self-indulgent trash" comment is residual fallout from your naked anime chick newsbox. You have to admit that it started a trend that is still with us. Many of the other keenspot comics that are certainly rougher in subject matter felt the need to top you. Perhaps there is a grudge over the "cheapening" of some perceived webcomic standard, whatever that would be and regardless of where the responsibility lies.

Holy Sweet Jesus Lord, Bob. (That's an exclamation, not your title).
I just clicked on random weeks throughout the length of your archive. A sampling here and there. Every week I looked at contained at least one strip at which I had to supress an out-loud laugh. Anyone who doesn't like SOAR as intensely as the detractor you speak of can only be jealous of your talent. That's all I can think of.
As for the self-indulgent part, they likely assumed that Max is a thinly disguised you, and that SOAR is largely autobiographical, due to the unimaginative, mundane, happens-every-day storylines.
Have you ever talked to Plan 9 publishing? I'd kill for a SOAR book. I'd even kill BoxJam for one. And I like him. That's how much I want one.

------------------

Anyhoo, I'd like to do a book a lot, even though it would mean rescanning all my strips at high res . But I haven't heard from Plan 9, and I'm entirely too chicken to ask them. I'm counting on them inviting me by mistake at some point, then I'll run with it.

(Editing away extra quote tag. Where'd that come from???)
------------------
