If you hear a cricket chirping and you have a watch, you can estimate the temperature where the cricket is. If you can hear more than one, you can tell whether they are experiencing different temperatures. To calculate the "cricket temperature," count the number of chirps in a 14-second period. Add forty to the result, and you have a rough estimate of the Fahrenheit temperature of the cricket.

The number of potential "trick-or-treaters" - 5 to 14 year-olds - across the United States, is 41.1 million, according to Census 2000. This number is greater than the "baby boom" children in this age range counted in the 1970 census (40.7 million). California had the largest number of 5 to 14 year-olds in 2000 -5.3 million. In 1970, California had 3.9 million.

-- All of the projected growth in world population will take place in today's developing countries. The 49 least-developed countries will nearly triple in size in 50 years, from 668 million to 1.86 billion people.
-- To accommodate the nearly 8 billion people expected on earth by 2025 and improve their diets, the world will have to double food production and improve distribution.
-- The world's richest countries, with 20 per cent of global population, account for 86 percent of private consumption; the poorest 20 percent account for just 1.3 percent. A child born today in an industrialized country will add more to consumption and pollution over his or her lifetime than 30 to 50 children born in developing countries.
-- Nearly 60 percent of people in developing countries lack basic sanitation, a third do not have access to clean water, one quarter lack adequate housing, 20 percent do not have access to modern health services, and 20 percent of children do not attend school through grade five.

Turkey production in the United States has more than tripled since 1970, meeting consumers' demand as more people choose turkey. With the value added to turkey through processing into a wide variety of cuts, parts and further processed products, the total value of turkey processors' production in 1999 was more than $7.8 billion. In 2000, about 267 million turkeys were raised with 45 million of those turkeys were eaten at Thanksgiving, 22 million at Christmas, and 19 million at Easter.
