Name: Prometheus
Color: 804000
Race: Warforged
Backstory:
Prometheus was recently reactivated by a young girl who had gone exploring in a system of caves on her family's estate. It awakened with no memories whatsoever - yet somehow, when the little girl addressed it, it was able to understand and respond. Requests for additional information were only met with confusion by the girl, who turned out to be named Alia; when Prometheus expressed confusion as to the nature of names, she proudly named it 'Mr. Clanky'. Upon following Alia out of the cave system, they discovered her family's guards, who had been out looking for her; upon seeing the two together, the guards immediately assumed the hulking construct had kidnapped her and attacked. They had no difficulty at all restraining Prometheus, who did nothing to resist. Its complete lack of understanding of the local justice system has led it to be imprisoned in the arena after mistakenly pleading guilty to kidnapping charges when asked if it had kept the girl in the caves, since she had stayed there for a while talking to him.

In the time since its initial reawakening, Prometheus has discovered a secondary intelligence housed in its chassis - a docent, embedded in its chest. The docent activates every night for diagnostic purposes; it has told Prometheus its' true designation, but has very little memory of its own; the docent was evidently designed to work from the same memory banks as Prometheus' primary brain. The docent has explained that one of its primary functions is translation, and it had been translating for Prometheus since the reawakening. Since then, every night when it activates to run its diagnostic, it has attempted to repair Prometheus' memory. Thus far, the only shred it has managed to recover is Prometheus' original purpose - it is designed for uplift. In theory, Prometheus' memory contains knowledge of all the skills necessary to take a Stone Age civilization and bring it forward to the technology level of its creators, although how high that level is is still unknown to it. Thus far, none of the skills have been recovered, either, but the docent did discover that new memories are being stored in an uncorrupted memory bank, so there is hopefully very little chance that new memories will become lost.

Uplift sounds like Prometheus is a construct from an advanced civilization who has been sent out to "uplift" primitive cultures, teaching them advanced technologies, etc.

Updated/fixed bio. Named the guy. Got no suggestions, so you get a sonic the hedghog referance.

Aand, I'm gonna shut up now because I don't like posting this much pre-game.

If you don't know, Haragorn might not either, so I had best explain:

1) A docent looks like a small ball, smaller than a baseball but larger than a marble. It fits into a warforged's chest cavity, and occupies its amulet slot for magical purposes (which means my character should not be able to benefit from magical amulets, in theory - but he doesn't know that!). They really do contain artificial intelligences to help out the warforged, commonly including language skills for translation, but the ability to repair amnesia is unique to my post, so far as I know (again, Prometheus has no idea whether his is unique or super common).

2) Here is a link to the wikipedia article on uplift; like ansible, it is part of the standard jargon of science fiction (before you look it up, an ansible is a faster-than-light radio). The implication is that Prometheus is meant to help bring about a Golden Age - although very plausibly not for the humans who've captured him. Unresolved questions include why he was buried in that cave, and whether or not a race that can built true artificial intelligence has YOUR best interests at heart when they offer to teach you through an A.I. how to make more A.I.s.

Dun dun dunnnnnnnn.

Mind you, Prometheus has no more idea than you do, and you can trust me because I'm the narrator and I'm writing in third person omniscient. Mind you, I've never suggested the docent is entirely honest......

Name: Wears-A-Fedora
Race: Goblin
Gender: Male
Color: Light Brown
Ability: Whip Proficiency
Defect: Fear of Snakes

Backstory: From a young age, Wears had a strong urge to explore the unknown. He would often wander away from the camp for days, pursuing one of his latest discoveries. One day during his travels, he found the decayed remains of an adventurer, including various weathered pieces of equipment. Among these abandoned items, there lay an old, dusty whip. He claimed that whip for his own, and immediately started practicing every day with it, until the whip no longer felt like a weapon, but an extension of his arm.

Of course, his successful exploration and discovery of the whip was more of an exception, rather than the rule. Most of the time, he would just wallow in some muddy pit, finding nothing useful, or getting into some sort of needless danger. Like the time he leaped thoughtlessly into a dark pit, hoping it was an entrance to a cavern filled with riches long abandoned. Instead, he found that the pit ended rather abruptly, and there were no riches at the bottom, just dozens of snakes. They writhed and slithered all around him, their scaly bodies sliding against his skin, causing him to shudder in disgust. He climbed out of that pit as quick as a whip, but the memory of that snake pit stayed with him forever. There are still nights where he wakes suddenly from his nightmarish sleep, screaming about snakes.

His days of exploration came to an end suddenly, that fateful day when the large band of humans stormed their camp. Wears was just one of numerous goblins taken captive that day, along with their chief, Prevents-Forest-Fires. Wears longs for the feeling of a whip in his hand again, and more importantly, to escape from this hellish Ring and return to his explorations.

Name: Lord Baron His Grace Sir The Right Honorable Valthurisaz Ignatius Ibrahimovic D'Nagr'U'Br'Hu'Uz XVII, Esquire
Race: Gnome
Val is a gnome wizard, specializing in illusions, trickster magic, charm magic, and fireballs. He was thrown into the ring for Grand Larceny, Murder, Arson, Theft, Use of Magic for Intimidation, Use of Magic for Larceny, and Vandalism. He wears a makeshift crown and ragged noble clothing shaped for a human-sized creature that has been burned off at the knees and elbows. He has dark brown skin, firey orange eyes, and dark hair and a beard that are graying and somewhat singed. He claims to be royalty. He isn't.
Powers: Whatever you see fit, along the lines of trickery and pyromania.
Weaknesses: Val never knows when to shut up, and often talks himelf into bad situations. He also tends to annoy people with his claims of high lordship. He also has a crippling fear of non-flammable liquids. He drinks only alcohol and rarely water, and as a result, is drunk most of the time. On the bright side, he has an extra liver. It's in his other coat.

Name: Minion #735-28-R
Colour: #8080FF
Sex: Male

Background: Min belonged to one of the lesser-known and easily-forgotten goblin clans which was only useful in the grand scheme of things as a convenient raid for low-level adventurers travelling between two towns. When he was two years old, he was sent to the warcamp for his naming ceremony and was sent out to spend the night on his own in the woods to prepare himself for the rituals that would take place the next day. Sadly, that same night the warcamp was completely overrun and the tribe all but wiped out. On finding the camp destroyed and the Teller dead, he started to head back towards his village but was captured en route by a group of monsters claiming to serve a demon named 'The Golden Queen'. He was imprisoned alongside a number of other small monsters, where he was given his code number and set to work in a vast underground lair as a minion. Although the work was extremely dangerous at times, he was able to learn a great deal about the inner workings of dungeon lairs, including how to set and disarm traps, how to stay out of the way of (bloodthirsty) superiors and (bloodthirsty) wandering adventurers as well as gaining a rudimentary knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of most of the realm's monsters. Eventually, a group of high level adventurers cleared out the dungeon he was working in and killed most of the guards, allowing him and a few others to finally escape. He wandered in the forest for several days before stumbling upon a goblin encampment where he was given a friendly enough welcome and allowed to make himself useful in exchange for food and a bed. Unfortunately, his brief taste of freedom didn't last very long and when the camp was attacked by humans, he was amongst those captured to fight in the ring.

BecomesInsecure (Insecure for short)
Male Goblin
This color. (FF40BF)

BecomesInsecure was born at a very young age... :P
But really though, Insecure was disappointed to find that his name was a self-fulfilling prophecy. As he grew up, his "friends" made fun of him for his name. They said things like "I bet you never were secure, ha!" and "You're dumb and I don't like you."
His friends weren't very clever.
Thankfully, BecomesInsecure adapted. He sometimes makes up for his sad insecurities with his outrageous and spontaneous acts of bravery, which he hopes will show him as cool and interesting.
Still, most of the time Insecure ends up in the corner, hoping nobody sees his pink skin or scrawny arms.
BecomesInsecure is scared to be here in the Ring, but he hopes he can break the curse his teller gave him from birth!

Oh, & his capture!

BecomesInsecure was a part of the large clan that was attacked by a giant group of humans. One adventurer attacked the tents near Insecure 's. Those around the tent scattered, trying to escape. However, Insecure saw another chance to prove himself, so he ran after a short human that was chasing another goblin. Right as he had planned to to a flying jump-kick into the man's back, BecomesInsecure tripped. The human picked up the small pink goblin and took him away. Insecure was shipped to the Ring with a few other goblins.
All BecomesInsecure could think: How embarrassing.

Goron'Kar
male orc
color #008040

Goron'kar was the commander of raid party of orcs, which attacked an outpost some impudent humans build on the edge of their territory, cause there was an important road on their side of the river and the only bridge for many miles. Although the scouts only reported about 25 guards stationed in the outpost, Goron'kar decided to attack with about 50 orc. He may be a veteran, but he never developed the affinity for a heroic death like most orcs do, and mourned for every single one who fell during a battle. But this day they just had bad luck, since a small army passed the road, planning on spending the night in the outpost. The orcs had choosen the dusk to attack, for the sight of the humans would be bad in the twilight. They already had slain many of the normal guards, when a company of about 100 foot soldiers poured into the courtyard, which guarded a company of 150 archers, which send a rain of arrows over the walls. When the orcs noticed and raised their shields, many already had fallen. Fighting like lions, the remaining orcs still managed to drive trough the lines of the soldiers. Then the split and attacked the archers, while only a handfull held of the soldiers. They shattered the archers and drove them away, but not without heavy losses. About 10 orcs were still standing, against 80 soldiers. As good as they fought, the numbers played against them. Goron'kar was the last orc standing on his feat, bleeding from many severe wounds and still taking out 5 soldiers, before the remaing 20 soldiers could overwhelm and bind him. Not wanting to die a heroic death made him fight even more heroic to avoid it.

The commandant of the army ordered all surviving orcs to be bound and cared fore, and send to the arena when the had recovered enough to survive the travel. All orcs hurt too much to recover enough to become a gladiator were killed. Goron'kar and 4 of his kin were send to the arena, but Goron'kar hasn't seen any of them yet.

He just will give his best to survive and hopes they don't make him fight against his own men.
(He fights the spartanic style, large roundshield, sword and a spear, leather armor)

traits: tough skin, dies hard, fast recovery, strong, experienced fighter, battlefield reflexes.

Edit: if somebody wants to play orc too, you can join in on this story, since 4 of his warriors survived too and were enslaved as well. Maybe they were send here too.

Re: Slaves to the Ring

Postby YoungAndBeautiful on Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:30 am

I decided to play a goblin after all. I already sent my background to haragorn and I am awaiting his "ok" after some minor changes he requested. Just FYI, since ThinksLogically made such a nice list. :D

Edit: And here she is:
Walks With The Wind
As oldest of many childs to two clanless goblins, who, prior to settling down, had taken a couple of adventuring levels, Walks With The Wind had always been prone to get out of the little hut full of siblings she was sometimes supposed to watch over and she quickly grew fed up with the saying "You should know better, you're the older one" from either parent whenever she was in dispute with one of her numerous sisters or brothers. Every outdoor task was so much better than being stuck inside having to listen to the constant ruckus the younger ones made, no matter how mind numbing boring it might have been. She dreamed of going further than the limits of the little secluded valley they lived in, and explore the world, maybe someday even take on some adventurer levels of her own.
She befriended the creatures (sentinent or not) of the valley whenever she found them, desperately searching for someone she could relate to, or to tell her something from the world out of her boundries, or just spend time with.
As a result she is very open minded and will try peaceful talk, if there is any chance in it succeeding, no matter how her vis-a-vis looks like.
She also has a talent for magic, some of it innate (her parents were a druid and a ranger), some "tricks" observed/learned from the magical creatures in the valley. She can't cast any spells yet, but it is only a matter of time until she gets the hang of it. Maybe being in a dangerous situation will set it free.
When she finally came of age, she told her parents that she wanted to go and explore the world, find some excitement, something that has been missing in her life so far. Her parents, reminded of their own past, smiled benevolently at her and allowed her to go. They gave her some equipment as well as a little bit of advice, knowing too well that she would want to find out most things on her own. They weren't worried, they had taught her well, and were confident that Walks would make her way in the world.
Soon after leaving the valley, Walks came across a camp of goblins, in fact, the one with Prevents-Forest-Fires as its chief. She decided to stay for a while to learn about life in a goblin camp. Unfortunately that meant she was present when the humans raided the camp for fresh slaves for the Rings and she was among the captives.

Traits:
*) open minded & friendly, tries to befriend almost everyone short from already charging into her - downside of being too trusting sometimes
*) latent magic talent, has yet to break surface - maybe cold/ice magic (would go nicely with her IME, or to befriend the yeti) and/or wind/weather magic (would go nicely with the name)
*) big urge to learn/find/see something new, to boldly go where she hasn't been before (explore), even to try known things in new ways, maybe there are some better than the teachings of old know about.
*) prefers to be outside, considerable knowlegde of surviving in the woods, herbs and other plants, animals, skills needed to gather things needed for every day life, doesn't mind doing boring tasks
*) no fighting skills worth mentioning, except maybe a knack for brawling from fights with her siblings

Looks: Young goblin female, Skin color #008000, hair color #04B010, IME color #D5FFF, a very light blue

I had this approved for a bit, I just hadn't posted it.

JackOfAllTrades
Male Goblin

Jack is a goblin who can do nearly everything, if not the best, still pretty good. This, however, has lead people to only talk to him when the best aren't around, leading him to feel rather aggravated and bitter. He usually gets over it though. He was captured on a routine slave making raid on his tribes war-camp by the city, along with his younger brother, NormalGuy. He has since lost track of him, something that worries him greatly.

Born one blustery winter day, he was named when the chief mistook a comment made by the teller of the clan, who'd said, "Boy, it sure gets cold in the wintertime." While Sir Get-Culled had managed to live up to his title by leading many a battle against human villages who had infringed upon the clan’s lands.
Gets-Culled has taken a liking towards lighting fires everywhere he attacks, due to his fear of his ominous and unnatural white foe, a foe so horrible that it still sends a shiver down his spine just thinking about it. He knows it often feels soft, but, really, it’s just hiding its evil nature. It obviously intends to do him in one of these days. He’d found that the best way to drive off this foe is by applying the use of fire or heat, so his goal is somehow to set enough of the world ablaze that his white nemesis will never return.
Such might have been his nemesis’s goal when, due to a food shortage, the chief had ordered a raid to be done on a human village in late autumn. As they had filled up their bags, the snow had started to fall. Everybody scampered away carrying as much grain as they could, but Sir Gets-Culled looked at the snow and hesitated, a hesitation which resulted in his capture. Soldiers from the human kingdom had been just fast enough reacting to the raid on the village that they’d managed to spot Sir Gets-Culled as he escaped back to his clan.
The news that the goblins in the area that had attacked a human settlement had spread as a result, which may be what tempted the large group of humans that ran the arena.

(Knowing Chief Prevents Forest Fires, he's at least going to be restrained from going into the forest to burn things, but Sir Gets-Culled's bound to have some arguments with his chief about just what is and what isn't okay to burn. And if he outlives his chief, Gets-Culled's more likely to burn much more than what the Chief would normally allow.)

I was just thinking that a snow hating, fire starting goblin and a yeti would probably not be best buds :D

Sir Gets: "Oh my lord - a walking snowball! Kill it with fire!"

Qau: "What you say?!?"
