In many a relationship it is fairly common for couples not to be able to resist an amount of 'amorous activities'. It's still not seen as doing the deed, which can feel like a whole different step. Perhaps they are still waiting for that.
As for it not being shown, I personally prefer this to be a comic strip with a progressive storyline, not a soap about who is doing who in which way at this precise moment (despite whatever activities the characters get up to as background notes ).
