what does "miffed" actually mean? Where does the word come from?

It's American slang. Means "pissed off" or "very upset". :wink:

Ahem, dude…
Miff = annoy. In other words, mildly upset. One may be miffed after a tiff. (Does anyone have tiffs these days?)

I will add that, colorful though it may be, I've never understood why pissed off = angry. I suspect it comes from one of my favorite Elizabethan expressions, "You're enough to make a man shit himself!"

Also, why am I channeling Moondogie?
