Obscure Reference?

If parody has a name, it must be... Zortic! ('cause, let's face it, what's Mel Brooks done lately?)

Obscure Reference?

Postby zortic on Fri Jan 12, 2007 4:23 am

Okay, I have to wonder if today's reference is too obscure? Does everyone recognize it? (If not, you should, it's a great movie.)

Also be aware that there's another line from that same movie coming up, watch for it!

Sorry, I'm trapped between the moon and NYC. Best that you can do is explain.

BTW For the Jan-24 strip: I've never thought that KISS's songs would make great punchlines! 8) And think of me when we're apart.

That's the problem with obscure references. They're...well...Obscure. And if folks don't get it, it turns into this whole "explaining the joke" thing.

THE CONTINENTALS. It's like Sherlock Holmes meets the 60's tv show "The Avengers" with a dash of James Bond for flavor.

Actually, I liked this comic more when the references were a bit more obscure. On which note, today's explaination of how sexual fetishes form: was that meant to be a paraphrasing of Asimov's explaination from the Foundation trilogy prequels?
I don't know, I thought the comic was better when it parodied classics rather than going after recently mainstream material like Fire Fly (a great show that WAS obscure for a while, but not quite so obscure since Serenity came out).

Perverted memories are some of my favorite memories.

Hi Connor, welcome to the forums. I agree with you that the classics are the best (usually I'm just afraid I'm showing my age). But something important to remember is that there's never just one parody. Eventually the Firefly parody will blend with another parody or two. I actually have several great classics coming up in the next few months.

The fetish formation is something I've heard in a few different places. But your right, it does fit right in with the Foundation concept.

I recall reading in Victorian times, prostitution was legal. They felt hookers drew the creeps away from good women.

So more mature and open societies have healthier outlooks? What happens in a society in which more and more women have no interest in relationships?

Time you put Chearl in a red dress, since you've been making a "Woman in Red" references for awhile. 8)

What? No strip today? I was hoping to see today the crew being chased by at least a dozen Bobbies riding a Ford T!
