The Video Game Topic

Postby Youindia on Sun Mar 12, 2006 4:42 pm

Yeah, a topic for just talking about games. Just so the Discuss Today's Comic won't become too off-topic.

I got The Rub Rabbits on Friday. The Rub Rabbits were a comedy/stunt troupe in Feel the Magix: XY/XX (known as Project Rub in most of the rest of the world).

http://image.lik-sang.com/images/large/ ... ko-jap.jpg

The Rub Rabbits was released in Japan as "Akachan wa Doko Kara Kuru no?", or "Where Do Babies Come From?". It was naturally marketed as a sequel to Feel The Magic in Japan, but in the states, third-party DS games just don't get advertised.

"Where Do Babies Come From?" was probably deemed too suggestive, but really, is "The Rub Rabbits" any less suggestive? Also, the famed Rub Rabbits from the first game have yet to make an appearance. Are they even in this game?

My favorite local game store, Rhino Games, had received a bag of lucky rabbits feet to give to people who preordered the game. Until Friday, nobody had even bought a copy, let alone reserved one, so I had my pick of the feet!

From the first game, which is running up a down elevator while avoiding pedestrians, I knew it was going to be a great game. If you liked Feel the Magic, you'll LOVE The Rub Rabbits.

...Oh, except for the voice acting. Your character's annoying "ha's", "wa's" "ooh-ooh-ooh's" and "atu's" are the same, but the breathy voice of the female lead is replaced with a more western voice. It just takes all the fun out of Break Time.

Just saw a commercial for Super Princess Peach. It features little girls in Princess Peach dresses, flying down ziplines on umbrellas and engaging in various bootcamp activities. Live action Nintendo commercials were funny in the nineties (remember the ones for Super Smas Bros.?), but now they're just tasteless.

If you don't remember the SSB commercials, they were basically Nintendo characters hugging and getting along... and then suddenly beating teh crap out of each other. By Nintendo characters, I mean people in full-sized foam costumes.

For example, Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Pikachu would run through a field of sunflowers, The Turtle's "Happy Together" playing. Mario would then kick Yoshi in the shin, and it would become an all-out brawl.

Look, I found a .wmv of that commercial!
/edit

There were other commercials for SSB which had just gameplay footage, but those weren't nearly as entertaining.

For the record, live-action Crash Bandicoot was never funny, while Segata Sanshiro commercials were ALWAYS funny.

Why do Americans always think they're capable of "catching up to the Japanese players"?

I think waiting for Twilight Princess has driven me mad.

It started innocently enough- riling up fans on the Gamefaqs Twilight Princess board by claiming that Ganon was hiding in several of the screenshots, and even in a few trailers.

"Ganon?!" They cried. "Surely you mean Ganondorf!"

Oh, no, no. I mean Ganon. The weird blue pig who just won't die.

"Where?!" They demanded. "You're a stupid n00b! We will pwn you!" They insisted.

I strung them along until they hated me. Hated by all, I finally showed them a screenshot, modified to clearly point out where Ganon was hiding.

The response was, naturally, my instant and painful death by flame.

"It's possible!" I told them, pulling out pie charts and some graphing paper. "The boss of the baddies is riding a blue pig! That's got to count for something!"

I was, by and large, ignored.

"It's not like the idea of the steed controlling the rider is THAT outlandish!" I said, showing images of Midna riding Link in wolf form. This sparked some interest... but not enough to keep my topic floating.

It was fun while it lasted, but any sane person would have given up here. Luckily, this is the story of my descent into madness.

Over the next few months, I would randomly appear out of the mists with big news or outrageous claims, backed with mediocre pictures assembled in Microsoft Paint.

I think I'm going to love Twilight Princess. I know NOTHING about it except it involves Link and a wolf and, from those screenshots you posted, the graphics remind me of Shadow of the Collossus. I have NO interest in finding out anything about it AT ALL. It will be such a surprise when I finally play it.

What will probably happen is I buy it a few months after it comes out... maybe when the REV is released. I can't remember the last time I got excited about a game... I'm really only looking forward to the REV in general.

Actually, Twilight Princess will be released around the same time as Revolution.. I won't tell you why, as you don't want to know anything.

Oh, and a bit on the Revolution.. the official name *may* be... don't quote me on this... "Nintendo GO". It just may be true, as my source is VERY trustworthy.

VERY trustworthy? Are you talking about that "presentation slide" that's been floating around? I hardly consider that image credible. It doesn't look any more geniuine or ingenuine than all the other REV images I've seen.

I actually saw that before my source did, if they're to be believed. Which they are.

...but no, it's not that. It's an interview which I was supplied with, but wasn't given a translation for. So, I guess I would have to give it to you in the original language and let you figure out the truth.

Apparently, my 'very trustworthy' source was less than... Well, 'very trustworthy'. When I acually got the first few lines of the 'interview' translated, it turned out to be... An ad for a cream that makes your nipples more pink! ...GRAH?!

What the... Nooo! I got pranked!

Friday, I wanted to go to game shopping. My little sister was impatiently waiting in the car, so I did my best to make it fast. I settled on a DS game I had been keeping an eye on- Lunar: Dragon Song.

(Ominous crash of thunder)

So, I got the game home, popped it in, and settled down for a long weekend of RPG goodness. Seriously, I made some popcorn (which I would eat with a large spoon, to avoid getting anything on my DS), lit a cherry-scented candle, cracked open a Pepsi, and pressed the on button. It was going to be a great evening.

...and then, I got to the gameplay. I... I don't want to talk about it.

I clocked over half an hour before I was forced to stop playing. By forced to stop, I don't mean something important came up. I'd freed up my schedule for this, making sure nothing would come up to distract me from my game. I was forced to stop playing by how BAD the game was!

Disgusted, I put it back in it's case, made sure that I knew where the receipt was, and tearfully walked away, mourning the thousands of hours lost on the making of this game.

I managed to salvage the mood somewhat by playing Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, followed by couple of quests in Phantasy Star Online. My gag reflex had been in effect the entire time I had been playing Lunar: Dragon Song (Ominous crash of thunder), so by now my Pepsi was warm and my popcorn was cold. The sweet scent of Bing Cherry in the air had long since faded to that of burning hair, and while I preferred the cherry, the hair wasn't all that bad... better than the amonia smell, anyway.

...Okay, so maybe I didn't really manage to salvage the mood. Either way, I had a crappy game to return.

Today was the day I returned the game... Unfortunately, Rhino Games, where I bought it, doesn't do cash returns- I would be able to get the full price back, but in the form of store credit. I eventually settled on a game I had wanted for a while, Metroid Prime II, and a game I was sure I would be disappointed by, Baten Kaitos. Together, the two used games were 'worth' about the same as a brand new Lunar: Dragon Song.

(Ominous crash of thunder)

Has the world known a greater injustice? I think not. I think not.

LOL, another victim of Lunar Dragon Song... the game is pretty deceptive since it looks pretty decent in the pictures... and well it's LUNAR. Too bad Gamearts had nothing to do with the game and they were retarded enough to make it so if you run you actually lose health... probably one of the biggest letdown games of last year.

If it hadn't been for my characters getting too tired to move after thirty seconds of running, I might have made it to an hour of gameplay.

...MIGHT have. I just finished today's comic , and am about to give Baten Kaitos (Ominous crash of thunder) a go. Here's to hoping it isn't a cheap Skies of Arcadia knockoff with cards tcked on! :D

!edit: ...Did I say 'ominous crash of thunder'? I meant 'happy bunny love cakes of RPG goodness'!

Oh yeah, just remembered... That's the third game I've ever returned. Some people buy games, beat them, then sell them... Bleh. I only return games when they're BAD. Here are the other two games I've returned:

Yuyu Hakusho: The Spirit Detectives (GBA)
This is basically the first few episodes of the anime, as a crappy game. I'm not a big fan of the anime, but I got the game as a gift, so I had to give it a try. After four hours of dull, repetitive gamepley, I had beaten the game. What did I get? A nice CG image of the characters.

Starfox Adventures
Fox should just keep his foxy little butt (er.. not THAT kind of a foxy little butt) in the cockpit.

...freaking dinosaur planet.

Gameplay-wise, Baten Kaitos towers over Skies of Arcadia.

Yeah, I've gotten past the first little bit of Baten Kaitos... I just killed the Thunderfish or whatever it's called, and the game seems pretty good so far. Gameplay during battle aside, I still prefer SoA at this point.

Oh I absolutely prefer SoA. Unfortunately the battle system really drags after a while. It's just S-move after S-move. Baten Kaitos' system actually gets better as you go. The more you upgrade your guys the less time you have to react in battle, plus you start finding cards with more numbers so you can score better combos. And level ups are optional if you want to make the game harder. It's genius. If only it had better VA and that "A"-game polish.
