Music about Avalon... well, sort of

Postby ParkRNDL on Sat Jan 08, 2005 8:21 pm

In my first post a couple weeks ago, I mentioned that I first stumbled upon Avalon while looking for information on music by Kenny Loggins. Besides being exposed to the wonders of Avalon, I did eventually find what I was first looking for. Kenny Loggins did an album around 1988 or '89 called "Back to Avalon", and I was looking for it, or more specifically for the title cut. An ex-girlfriend of mine had once put it on a mix tape for me (jeez, "mix tape"... dating myself  ) and I wanted to find it again. It occured to me that Avalon fans might like it, so I'm posting the lyrics here. I searched the forum archives for the name Loggins, and the only hit was my earlier post, so I'm assuming this hasn't been done already.

The lyrics don't really have much to do with our comic strip Avalon. Or maybe they do. I guess it's like with any art form--what you take away from the experience may be totally different from someone else. I don't really see much connection to King Arthur's Avalon either, though my entire knowledge of King Arthur's Avalon was gained in less than 10 minutes using Google as a primary resource, so maybe I just didn't look hard enough.

The music is standard 80's soft rock ballad, which brings me back to high school... particularly fitting in this case. :) Amazon.com has the album from a variety of online stores, starting at prices that are actually less than the shipping cost, if anyone is interested. It can also be found on WinMX if you're into that sort of thing, but it's relatively rare...

I'm thinking this would make an outstanding bonus track on my Sd'A CD, when I get around to burning it (thanks KAH! )

BACK TO AVALON by Kenny Loggins

A vision
A flash of light
A gift we were given
Within each other's dreams
We lived in the gardens of Avalon

Together
Believed that we could live there forever
Then it faded away
Forgetting, we wandered too far from the land we'd known

Of all the lonely people
You're among the lucky few
If it comes even once in a life

(Chorus)
Love is a lesson hard to learn
It's never as easy to return
But if you're willing to go on
We'll find a way back to Avalon
Avalon....

They had it
It wasn't far away or imagined
He held her in his arms
And planned it all
The towers of Avalon

They warned him
He only turned around for a moment
And everything had changed
He noticed the sun on her face as she looked away

Of all the lonely people
You're among the lucky few
If it comes even once in a life

(Chorus)
Love is a lesson hard to learn
It's never as easy to return
But if you're willing to go on
We'll find a way back to Avalon

And when you come to know the miracle, it's mystical
When someone else's heart is in your hand
I learned too late, now I must try and find a way back home

Here is a lesson hard to learn
It's never as easy to return
But if you're willing to go on
We'll find a way back to Avalon

Nice...

Although I'm getting a nasty case of clashing mental images here, but it's not your fault:
  • There's Avalon, the comic strip.
  • And I'm working on the archive review for this week, which has its own special set of mental images.
  • Then there's King Arthur and the Matter of Britain.
  • Which in my case automatically triggers Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • And for some reason, the juxtaposition of Kenny Loggins and "Back to Avalon" makes me think of "Return to Pooh Corner", so now I'm thinking Pooh Bear things. (Or maybe I should say that I am Thinking Pooh Bear Things.)

And there's just not enough room in my head to juggle that many mental images at once. :-)

Slightly more applicable than Roxy Music.

Yyyep. And I'm not entirely sure what the heck I'm going to write about THAT frame yet, because I don't think I can do it justice.

I'll probably just refer to some of the posts from that week's forum threads; they said it better than I can.
