Avalon Forum info/rules/FAQ

Postby Josh Phillips on Sun Jul 14, 2002 3:50 pm

This forum is the place to go if you want to talk about Avalon. It's sometimes more like a community than a message board -- stick around and you'll probably get to know a lot of people pretty well. Newbies and lurkers are encouraged to participate. Hopefully you'll see that this is a friendly place.

There really aren't any complicated rules. Feel free to discuss things about Avalon, or things that the average Avalon reader might find interesting. There are a couple of things that are particularly important, though:
  • Don't start off-topic discussions that have nothing to do with the comic. Also, don't turn any existing threads off-topic. If you want to discuss something unrelated to Avalon, you can find another forum on the Internet for it.
  • No spamming. This includes posting random gibberish just to fill up space/offend people/increase your forum rank, and posting *only* for the sake of advertising something.
  • Do not <I>inline</I> pornographic or explicit images (including some fan art). You can <I>link</I> to such things: use the [url] tag. This prevents nasty surprises for some people (including people at public computers or at work/school).
  • It's recommended that, when linking to Avalon strips, link to the HTML page in the archive. Don't link to or inline the image itself (ie. use http://www.avalonhigh.com/d/19991108.html, *not* .../comics/avalon19991108.gif). Advertising revenue is dismally low, and Keenspot needs every adview it can get.

<B>FAQ</B>
<I>What's the deal with the poking?</I>
Poking is the method some people use to welcome new users to the forum. It's not meant to be degrading or offensive; it's all in good fun. The origin of forum poking is hazy, but it's commonly attributed to a random event in the CRFH forum.

<I>How do I link to something?</I>
The easiest way is to simply type out the URL in your message; the forum software will convert to a link automatically. A more complex way is to use the [url]tag. [url=http://forums.keenspot.com/faq.php?mode=bbcode]Click here[/url] for more info. Also, even though HTML can be used in the forum software, the <A> tag doesn't seem to do anything.

<I>How do I post an image?</I>
First, the image must be hosted somewhere on the web. If it's just sitting on your hard drive, you need to upload it to a web server. Free webhosting services like Geocities used to be ideal for this purpose, but they now block images from being used on servers other than their own. It might be easier to ask around for someone who's willing to host an image for you.
Once that's done, you just need to use an [img] tag to put the image in your message. Click here for more info.
Alternatively, Packy operates an gallery for people to post their images. See his post further down on this page.

Got any other questions? Feel free to ask; someone knowledgeable enough will usually respond.

JOSH.

Sounds fair to me.

If you can't see these images, I hate Geocities and I'm too lazy to register elsewhere.

Poking is this forum's method of greeting new users. It's not meant to be degrading or offensive at all, but rather as a rite of passage, incorporating newbies into the community. Don't take it too seriously. :-) Once you've been active in the forum for a while, you too can poke newbies. Creativity is always welcome. :-) The origin of forum poking is hazy, but it's commonly attributed to a random event in the CRFH forum.

This might be a little strongly stated. As written, it goes beyond tacit acceptance of poking all the way Administator Mandate. "You vill be greeted by der pokink und by NO OTHER VAY!" Perhaps the first sentence should be changed to: "Some forum regulars use poking as a method of greeting new users." This acknowledges poking as part of the culture without inscribing it into Forum Law.

Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to change the wording a bit...

Was there ever a consensus on how to handle off topic posting?

No. :-) It would be too difficult to moderate while still keeping things fun and community-like, so it'll probably just remain loose and open-like.

Just some more info for newbies:

The Avalon Boardies Gallery - ever wonder what your fellow Avalon board people look like? Well, here's your chance to find out. Participation is optional, but encouraged. Sumissions may be sent via email to packy or Sanna, or a URL to a picture may be sent via private message to packy, Sanna or Gigafreak.

Avalon Fanart Gallery - sometimes people want to post their art on the forum, but don't have web space to do so. This gallery was created to serve this need. If you're a fanartist, send a private message to packy and he will provide you with a login enabling you to load artwork into the gallery.
Proudly hosting the It's Walky!/Avalon Fanart Gallery to ensure that spreading quality fanart doesn't require your own webserver. Email or PM for a login to post pictures.

Added an "off-topic" section, and added a FAQ about the sticky threads.

I mentioned this in a topic of my own creation, which had some view before it died, but Ill mention it here aswell, and maybe Josh can put it up into the top post:

If you rename your image file to another extension such as .txt, you can use the image tag and it will display. You can also link directly to it. (People wishing to download the file must rename it to a JPG or GIF file after, however, to be able to load it by double-clicking on it)

When I opened that "txt" file in Mozilla, it displayed as text. :-)

So. The following image is "test.txt" on my Keen server...

Image

Well, it worked. I am using IE5. I dunno how you opened it in Mozilla, but I think the trick is telling the browser that it should be accepting an image. Then it will read the GIF header, and display the image regardless of the extension. I could rename that to .exe if I wanted, and if I tell the browser it's a picture it'll look for a picture.

I bet.

Hm... that worked.

Ah, I see where I had the problem... when I clicked on the link in this thread. That filled my browser with a bunch of gobbledygook. But the inline images work just fine.

We had a few discussions about excessive OT-posting and I thought I might link them here for future reference.

The first was "Educating Gigafreak" and the second was "Do we have to go through this again?" The reading is highly recommended to Newbies.

Oh, BTW, Josh, I really like the new rule of having the last 3-5 days worth of strip-related threads being sticky at the top.

(That is, I assume that it is a new rule. If it isn't, I would advise it. It really gets all the signal up where people can see it *and* it gives discussions a few days to mature and ripen.)

Indeed. It's not really an official practice (nor was the original stickification, technically), but it's definitely something to be tried.

Er, I have a question. If we can't have off topic discussions, what CAN we discuss? Until we get more guest art or you get better and make more comics, that is.

Check out the current archive review threads, or the guest strip threads, or the fanart threads, or go and bitch about how pissy some impatient readers can get...

Or don't discuss anything at all... basically, if you don't want to discuss Avalon, then there may be better places to be than the Avalon Forum.

I just want to verify/falsify a rumor I have heard. Is the Avalon forum, in fact, at war with the Sinfest forum? And Hi.

The Sinfest forum has, on a couple of occasions, "invaded" the Avalon forum (which basically consists of posting flames in existing threads, and creating a bunch of spam threads). Each time, they have eventually lost interest and left. Other than that, we pretty much ignore them.

In that case... Please please PLEASE update so we actually HAVE something to talk about. No, this is not meant to be a flame, and if it is taken that way I appologize, it is merely a begging fan who is forced to be a lurker (at least here) since there's nothing really to talk about.
