Does Extreme really miss about half the hits? What about NedStat? Not that I'm too stressed about viewership but I am trying to attract more readers and I wasn't aware that the counters generally undercounted.
One thing that I find is interesting is that I get a ton of reloads/non uniques - I can only hope that its folks skimming the site and archives as opposed to my mom hitting the reload button to cheer me up...
------------------
Sure yeah I draw comic strips -

What I've found, especially within the last month or two, is that Extreme's servers cannot handle the load of all its customers. If the Extreme website cannot be contacted by the time a user surfs to another page (or can't be contacted at all), then the user isn't counted. It seems lately, this happens more often than not when I visit sites with Extreme tracking.
For a long time, I couldn't figure out why I got most of my readership at 6:00 in the morning. I finally figured it out--that's when there's low webtraffic all around, and therefore Extreme's servers are less taxed and can record more actual hits. At that point, I dropped Extreme all together.

SJTD -
Yeah, eXTReMe (sp?) undercounts - and it's
not just that it doesn't count reloads -
sometimes it's counted the same IP address
as two distinct hits just seconds apart.
On the other hand, it will go hours w/o
registering a hit for me, when my local (that
is, on the same server as the page) counter
counts 50.
My local counter doesn't count reloads
either (nor 'back' button reloads), and
gets more than twice as many hits.
Of course, purple planet does give valuable
info about who your best referrers are, what
systems and resolutions people are at, etc.
